Our investment approach and portfolio.

Approach

Innovation and Impact first

We prioritize the creation of impact and believe this is best achieved through sound business models with a holistic and innovative approach to value creation in which nature and communities are improved whilst generating financial value.

Native species

We are committed to planting native trees for timber production and carbon sequestration, while building on our experience with — and not excluding— traditional (exotic) tree species. In many tropical countries, the supply of high-value timbers from natural forests is declining, while there is tremendous untapped potential to build high-value supply from sustainably managed (mixed) native species plantations. These systems can also contribute to biodiversity conservation and deliver multiple ecosystem services. By applying silvicultural technologies and best management practices from traditional timberland species, we ensure the biological growth and tree quality required to service high-end timber markets.

Nature restoration

We often work in environments affected by historical deforestation and degradation, and are committed to restoring natural forests and ecosystems, along with the biodiversity they support. Carbon markets and other payments for ecosystem services enable us to integrate the restoration of nature as a significant component of our investments.

Landscape approach and social inclusion

Our investments are part of dynamic, living landscapes. We aim to develop strong relationships with both natural and human communities, and to contribute positively to these systems. We seek to strengthen ecological quality where we can, for example by creating ecological corridors. Our interventions should lead to meaningful jobs and capacity building. We also aim at social inclusion through community and outgrower programs that support community tree planting and integrate local producers in domestic and international timber, carbon and agricultural value chains.

Focus on performance

A key to success is our active and hands-on approach to management. We support and guide portfolio companies on a daily basis, focusing on performance at every step of the process, from seed to finished product. We foster learning, adaptation and making small improvements every day.

Diversified revenue drivers and value addition

A strength of building with nature is the ability to use biodiversity to generate multiple products and revenue streams, and with that approach mitigate operational and market risks. We pursue opportunities to add value to our products close to source, through primary and secondary timber processing and optimized use of raw materials. This strengthens margins and supports the creation of high-quality local jobs.

Transparency, measurement and reporting:

We recognize the growing importance of transparency, impact measurement and disclosure. We work according to the highest standards and align our investments with EU Taxonomy and SFDR Article 9. For our investors and stakeholders, we strive to provide the high-quality impact and performance information they need.

Amazon Restoration Company

Country: Peru
Under management since: 2024

The Amazon Restoration Company (ARC) restores biodiverse and productive forest landscapes in the Peruvian Amazon. ARC’s objective is to achieve large scale forest landscape restoration in the Peruvian Amazon with three restoration strategies, using native tree species only:

  1. mixed native tree plantations for timber and carbon sequestration,
  2. natural forest restoration to restore biodiversity and sequester carbon,
  3. smallholder agroforestry (outgrower program) for timber, carbon sequestration and support the communities in the landscape.
